La vendemmia - our first grape harvest!

When your friends beckon and the vines need pickin', who can resist?

Roberto heads for the harvest

Our beloved neighbours, Giuseppe and Giovanna Bruno have been a part of our lives since day one and play a huge part in what makes Trullo Stella Mare the joy it has become.

Yesterday, we were very excited because they invited us to join them in 'La vendemmia' a  day of harvest when friends and family help pick grapes and then eat to celebrate together.

We started earlyish, around 8am

Between thundery showers and bright sunshine, we bent, twisted, peered and cut off some some 11 quintales of grapes (one quintale = 100kg) which were then trucked off to the press down the hill.

The team!

Team with Roberto!

There were 12 of us and amazingly we were done in about three and a half hours, teams yelling 'secchi' - buckets as some cut grapes and others delivered the buckets overflowing with fruit to the sorters. Then, as the truck left we went our respective ways to clean up for lunch!

Giovanna is the BEST cook and we ate like kings: her home made focaccia, peperoni, aubergines, orecchiette con sugo do pomodoro e caciacavallo, roast chicken and potatoes and fresh fruits from their orchards. Last year's vino and after, the rocket fuel digestives - laurel, limoncello etc. But they're another story.

Next time we come, we're making some with them! These are just a few photos from a truly memorable day which made us feel a part of a community, not the foreign visitors we actually are.
